Unfortunately, dentistry has a reputation for being painful. Dentists have been parodied as masochists in television, movies, and other forms of popular culture, as well. At Family Dental Choice, we want to put an end to this stereotype. Dentistry does not need to hurt at all! It doesn’t need to cause anxiety, either! We are licensed by the American Dental Association to provide our patients with three ways to make it through even the most complex of treatments without an ounce of discomfort.
- Mild Sedation — Mild sedation is ideal for simple procedures, such as a cleaning, and usually incorporates the use of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. The nitrous is combined with oxygen and delivered to the body via a mask that is placed over the nose. Your dentist can control how little or how much gas is needed to make you feel completely relaxed. When the procedure is over, the mask is removed and the effects subside within a few minutes; most people can even drive themselves home after their appointment.
- Moderate Sedation — Moderate sedation often requires the use of a pill that is taken about an hour before treatment. Once the medication has taken effect, you will feel relaxed and possibly even fall asleep. When your dentist has completed your procedure, you will awaken a bit groggy, but with little memory or discomfort. Another moderate sedation option is delivered via IV, allowing your dentist to control the amount needed to make you comfortable. With both of these methods, you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment.
- Deep Sedation — Deep sedation uses general anesthetic and will make you unconscious, as if in a deep sleep. General anesthesia is most frequently used for more complex, invasive procedures. After your dentist stops administering the anesthesia, the effects take time to wear off, so as with moderate sedation, you’ll need a ride home.
